World Professional Association For Transgender Health (WPATH)

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), formerly known as the (Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, HBIGDA), is a professional organization devoted to the understanding and treatment of gender identity disorders.

WPATH Mission Statement
As an international multidisciplinary professional Association the mission of WPATH is to promote evidence based care, education, research, advocacy, public policy and respect in transgender health.

WPATH Vision Statement
The vision of WPATH is to expand its worldwide authority by promoting  education, advocacy, training, research, quality health care and best practice standards for service providers and policy makers regarding gender variant individuals.

WPATH Standards of Care

The WPATH's Standards of Care for Gender Identity Disorders articulate our organization's professional consensus about the psychiatric, psychological, medical, and surgical management of gender identity disorders. Professionals may use this document to understand the parameters within which they may offer assistance to those with these problems. This document may also assist you with your research and understanding of the current thinking of professionals. This is the sixth version of the Standards of Care since the original 1979 document. The first five versions were published in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1990 and 1998.

International Journal of Transgenderism (IJT) is the official journal of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health

Like WPATH, the journal is committed to the advancement of knowledge in the areas of:
gender dysphoria
improvement in the medical and psychological treatment of transgender individuals
social and legal acceptance of hormonal and surgical sex reassignment
professional and public education on the phenomenon of transgenderism
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health Biennial Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia on September 24-28, 2011.  The educational and scientific programs will be held at the luxurious Emory Conference Center hotel which has available for its guests a fitness center, spa and restaurants.

Collaboration / Events
Notable events happening during this meeting include a joint reception and workshop with Southern Comfort Conference and the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association, who will be holding their respective meetings during the same weekend. Several respected key note speakers will be addressing the WPATH membership during the welcome reception (details to be released soon). Several highly informative educational programs will be held during this meeting including a pre-conference activity (a CME program) on September 24, 2011 to update novice through expert healthcare providers of transgender and transexual health on various topics on medical, social and psychological treatment of transgender individuals and a surgical summit meeting for expert surgeons around the world. The scientific meeting will start on September 25 with sessions focused on endocrinology, psychology, social work and surgical treatment. The Gala night will be held at the famous Fernbank Museum of Natural History located less than 1 mile from the conference site.
